Words & Music by Ben Smith

lyrics

We thought that we would spot the station,
heard it was coming in from the southwest
at 6:17 pm, Saturday night.

But we were too busy arguing over
whether Revolver was better than Rubber Soul.
It's the same argument we have every year.

Jess fed the fire, we talked about tv,
which shows we were late to,
which ones we just blew through.
We sat six feet apart and it was mostly okay.

We watched the dogs run, imagined we were one,
we watched as a hawk flew and everyone there knew
we were about to see one hell of a sunset.

I guess this is not so bad:
that's the bright idea we all had.
Can't get so mad when a mad world gets more mad,
so I guess this is not so bad.

Marc and I, we talked about Jim
and how much we are missing him
and how much all of this fucking sucks.

Then some boys skated down Marshall Drive
they were flying, just so alive—
sometimes downhill's not so bad.

All of our sighs formed an unspoken motto,
every dog bark a bright staccato,
when the neighbors walked by no one knew their names.

Leo told me a secret, but I'll never tell it,
the sky grew dark and the fire was moonlit,
And we waited until the embers refused to glow.

I guess this is not so bad:
that's the bright idea we all had.
Can't get so mad when a mad world gets more mad,
so I guess this is not so bad.
